You have pushed the play button on the Web Radio Today podcast. Hi, everybody from Nashville, I’m Skip Orem and welcome to episode number 17 of Web Radio Today. Deep into August, right in the middle of the dog days of summer. I got to tell you though, the dog days and these 90 plus degree days here in Tennessee, they don’t bother me because summer is my favorite season. And I love every day of summer. The really cool thing about living in Tennessee is that, well, we get a little longer summer than my friends in the North. Our May is it’s actually more like June and then September seems to be just like August. So that’s like we get maybe five months of summer down here. Wherever you are listening from today, whatever the weather I am so happy that you decided to push the play button.

And you’re not going to be disappointed as we take our faith and fitness, our great attitudes, positive imagery, knowledge, and music. And we put them all together and they become the Web Radio Today disease fighting and fitness model, which helps us to stay healthy and live longer, fight off diseases. The Web Radio Today podcasts were geared specifically for us older folks in our 60s and 70s and beyond. We are all working together to help each other stay healthy. And of those seven elements of the Web Radio Today, disease fighting and fitness model. Today, we’re going to discuss music and how it can help us stay healthy and happy. The music element of our Web Radio Today, disease fighting and fitness model we are going to be talking about it not only on today’s episode, but also on next week’s Web Radio Today podcast episode. What I want to do today is to feature how music can improve your mood, reduce stress, lessen anxiety, help us to deal with pain. Can help to keep our memory intact.

And of course, how it can improve our overall health and our feeling of wellbeing. And then on next week’s episode, we’ll talk about how music, how it can motivate you while you’re exercising. Oh, and then also a little later in the podcast today, I want to talk about how friendships can keep you healthy. You know everybody, a perfect example of music motivating you to exercise. Well, that would be last week’s special Web Radio Today episode. The Web Radio Today in the zone, heart rate training workout. Last week’s episode, what generated so many positive emails, not only about the workout, but specifically about the music are selected for the workout. Most of the music featured on that workout was regular Web Radio Today, stock music. But I did play a few special songs, but well, because of how the workout intervals were timed, I never was really able to play a song in its entirety.

And of course I was talking over some of the songs, coaching and training listeners as they did the workout. So what I’m going to do on today’s episode is play two of the songs, featured on the workout and give you a chance to listen to them in their entirety. The first of those songs will be the music for today’s mini workout. And then the second will be both the featured song today and your cool-down song after the mini workout. I use, especially in the background music frequently on our Web Radio Today, podcast episodes. I play music to inspire us as we do our mini workouts. I play songs for us to enjoy and to discover as featured songs. I use music to move us from well from one segment of the podcast to another. I enjoy using music sometimes to set the tone, set the mood, or to reinforce things that I’m trying to say.
Skip Orem (13:11):
Just to highlight how important music is in our lives. Certain songs can cement important events, both happy and sad into our memories. For some of us, a particular song it can take us back to the exact moment when we knew we were in love. As we try to get and to stay healthy, it’s important that we do everything we can to reduce stress. And that includes being active, eating healthy, meditating, laughing more, spending time with God and spending more time with our family and our friends. Getting enough sleep and including music in our lives. Listening to, or playing music is such a good stress reliever because it’s sort of provides a mental distraction. It can reduce muscle tension and it actually decreases stress hormones. It’s got to be good, right?
Skip Orem (14:46):
A few weeks ago, I did a positive imagery session as part of Web Radio Today episode eight, music was a significant part of that session because it helped listeners to be still and relax, discharging the physical effects of stress. You go for a massage, most of those sessions, they have music playing in the background. Again, to help you relax and unwind so that you get the maximum effect from the massage session. Faster music, uptempo music, it can make you feel more alert and concentrate better. Faster, more upbeat music can make you feel more optimistic and have more of a positive attitude about life. And slower tempo music, it can soothe your mind, relax your muscles, relieve stress.
Skip Orem (16:16):
I know of an individual who while battling cancer, she was older like us. She decided right then and there to learn to play the piano. It’s something she’d always wanted to do. So right there in the middle of a life and death battle with cancer, she started to learn to play the piano, never had played any kind of musical instrument in her entire long life. She credits the distraction, the enjoyment, the feeling of accomplishment, of learning to play the piano, and listening to other people play the piano. She says that all that was instrumental in winning her life and death battle with cancer.
Skip Orem (17:18):
Listening to music before you go to sleep at night, it quiets your mind and it helps you to fall asleep. We know sleep is so important for us in staying healthy and fighting off diseases. And everybody, while music is one of the Web Radio Today, disease fighting elements. I’d also encourage you to look at the arts in general and include them in your life. It is absolutely not too late to start a hobby, painting, photography, building things, enjoying nature, just any kind of hobby. I don’t have any aptitude, probably don’t have the attention to detail for gardening. But I was thinking the other day that especially at the point we are in our lives, I would think gardening just watching and planning for that whole life cycle of things, that’s part of gardening, I think that’d be a pretty cool hobby. Hobbies, they help to enrich your life. They’re wonderful stress reducers. They make you a more rounded and interesting person. And of course they help to keep you healthy.

Let’s talk briefly about the importance of friendship in keeping you healthy and in improving your quality of life. Friendships or lack of friendships that can have a big influence on your health and on your overall wellbeing. Friends, they can help you celebrate the good times and they can provide support during the bad times. I pray everybody that you are doing everything you can to strengthen the friendships you have, and to keep always trying to grow your circle of friends. Friends they can help so much and increasing your sense of belonging and purpose, reducing stress, and helping you cope with bad things that might happen to you. And let me ask you this everybody, because faith is first and it’s the foremost element in the Web Radio Today, disease fighting and fitness model.
Skip Orem (22:14):
I want to make sure that you also consider Jesus a very close friend of yours. In John 15:15 Jesus says, “I no longer consider you servants.” And he goes on to say, “Instead, I have called you friends, for everything I have learned from my father. I have made known to you.” And then this amazing verse, it comes just a little earlier, in John chapter 15. It’s verse 13, greater love has no one than this to lay down
one’s life for one’s friends. Jesus, he laid down his life everybody, all of that suffering and his death on
the cross it was for us. We need him as our friend. He offers us life.
Skip Orem (23:38):
The Irish poet Joseph Scriven, he wrote these beautiful and very true words. What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins, our grief to bear, and what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Oh, what peace we often forfeit. Oh, what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations is the trouble anywhere. We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all of our sorrows share. Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer. If you have not accepted Jesus as your friend, I want you to do it today, walk into any church and tell the first person you see that you want Jesus to be your friend. You’ll put a smile on their face, probably make a new friend for life, and they’ll introduce you to their friend Jesus. He’s waiting to be your friend. For the Web Radio Today podcast, I’m Skip Orem.
