Hey, everybody. From Nashville, I’m Skip Orem, and this is Web Radio Today Episode number 21. Thank you so much for pushing that play button today, and I promise that you are not going to be disappointed with today’s episode. It’s a nice, full episode. Not like last week when I had to put the episode together at the last minute because, well, because I forgot to tell you all that I hadn’t planned on doing an episode last week. By way of apologizing to you all, there is a special treat in store for you on today’s episode.
Skip Orem (01:08 ):
Also today, I’m featuring the knowledge element of the Web Radio Today disease fighting and fitness model. And guess what. Always full of surprises. I changed the name of the knowledge element. So now the Web Radio Today’s disease fighting and fitness model’s seven elements are faith, diet, exercise, attitude, positive imagery, music, and research.
Skip Orem (01:35):
That’s right. I changed the name of the knowledge element to the research element because I think research is more of an active description of what this element is all about. I will let you know what that research element entails and why it’s an important part of our disease fighting and fitness model. We’re going to talk about that in detail on today’s episode.
Skip Orem (02:01):
Everybody, I’ve been getting some conflicting emails about the featured song that appears on every Web Radio Today podcast episode. Many folks have told me that, well, they enjoy our featured songs. And, well, some of you have even asked how you could get copies of the music that I feature. However, I got to tell you this: almost an equal number of emails from listeners indicate that they prefer we not waste podcast time with a featured song. Listeners frequently ask, what does the featured song have to do with the subject of the podcast? Well, the answer is, first and foremost, music is one of the seven elements of the Web Radio Today disease fighting and fitness model.
And this email stuff is running about 50/50. 50% of the people like the featured song, the other 50%, don’t see the purpose in interrupting the podcast with a featured song. If you remember last week’s kind of disjointed episode, I played the featured song at the end of the episode rather than in the middle, somewhere like I usually do. And by doing that, it appears that I’ve stumbled onto a solution that’s going to make everybody happy.
I will play the featured at the end of the podcast. That way it doesn’t interfere with the other stuff that’s going on during the episode. And if you don’t want to waste your time listening to the featured song, you can just stop the podcast at that point. You won’t miss anything else. I’m going to try that for the next couple of episodes, and we’ll see how that all works out.
Skip Orem (03:48 ):
New listeners, by the way, are joining the podcast with every new episode. And I’m really so happy about that. Web Radio Today, we have listeners from all over the world, not just in the US. Everybody, especially folks in their 60s and 70s, all over the world, looking to fight disease, get fit, and stay healthy.
Skip Orem (04:14):
On today’s episode, in addition to talking about the research element, I want for us to think a little bit about leadership. Who should our leader be? More about that later. Right now, though, my special gift to you by way of a apology because I screwed up last week, your gift is that I took a little extra time this week, and I put together a special mini workout for this episode.

Usually we do a short three-minute or so mini workout. We do that every episode. However, today’s mini workout, it’s going to be a mini interval training workout. So get ready to spend the next 10 minutes exercising and burning calories. And then after this mini workout, we will delve into the research element of the Web Radio Today disease fighting and fitness model.

Skip Orem (After Workout) (17:28 ):
I included knowledge in our original Web Radio Today disease fighting and fitness model. The reason that I did that was because I wanted us all to know how important it is to have a good understanding of the information available to us for disease fighting and improving our health.
Skip Orem (17:49):
There is what I feel a more important first step in gaining that knowledge, and that is to know where to find it and how to get it. Whether you’ve just been diagnosed with a disease or you just want to learn how to eat healthy and how to exercise properly, it’s hard to do that on your own. And that’s not because there’s any lack of information. One of the problems is that there’s too much information available to us. A lot of it is conflicting, and quite frankly, a lot of it is just plain bogus information.
Skip Orem (18:27 ):
As it pertains to diet and exercise, I like to think that the Web Radio Today podcast is a pretty good first step in obtaining information, especially as it relates to diet and fitness. But on these 30-minute podcasts, I just skim the surface and then I try to lead you to go after more information.
Skip Orem (18:51 ):
At our age, we’re all baby boomers in our 60s and 70s and beyond, and next to God and our family, our health, it needs to be the most important thing to us right now. In our age group, we are so vulnerable to life-threatening diseases, and it’s so important we try everything we can to keep ourselves healthy and fit. And as part of our overall well-being, we need to keep ourselves informed, especially in the areas of our health.
Skip Orem (19:27):
So how do we start to do this research and get this information? Well, our first source for information is our doctor. We all need to know what’s going on with our body inside and out, and the first person who can help you to find out about this stuff is your doctor. Most of us need to be spending time with our
doctors, having tests, at the very least being with our doctor every six months, and then more frequently
if we’re sick or have an illness or disease.
Skip Orem (20:01):
Please, everybody, make sure that you make the most of your time with the doctor. I always think through the visit in advance, prepare my written list of questions. The doctors, they are your first source of medical information. And if you don’t feel comfortable with your doctor, if you feel that they might be annoyed by all the questions that you ask, we either talk with them about that or change doctors.
Many of us, when we go on a doctor’s visit, we have trouble hearing them. Or sometimes they might be talking just a little too fast for us. Well, what we need to do is to ask them to speak up or to slow down, or bring someone with you who can help you hear, understand, and then remember what the doctor’s saying to you.
I’m a very annoying old person. I don’t hear well, even with hearing aids. And I have trouble remembering things, especially things that are said and compressed in somewhat stressful situations like a doctor’s appointment. So I take my wife along on all important doctor’s appointments. Between the two of us, we’re pretty effective in getting the information we want.
Skip Orem (21:18):
No doctor has fired us yet as patients. I’ve changed doctors before, though, when I either lost confidence in them or they just didn’t seem to care. Of all the health research you do, everybody, the most important information is the information you get from your doctor.
Skip Orem (21:38):
When I was first diagnosed with prostate cancer, in addition to being scared to death, I didn’t know what to do. However, I was so fortunate in that my doctors, they were awesome. They provided me with so much information and then they suggested other places to go to find additional information. Like most cancer patients, I had some very difficult decisions to make about how I wanted to proceed with my treatment, and I needed information.
Skip Orem (22:12):
And I learned from personal experience that the web, Google … I’ll tell you this with Google. If you weren’t already scared about your diagnosis, Google will scare you for sure. Googling prostate cancer, for me, that was like a house of horrors. But I continued to do my research, ask my doctors for help, and I found a few sites where I could find credible information. And also with recommendations from my doctors and friends and other prostate cancer survivors, I was able to find outstanding books that were, well, they ended up being just totally invaluable to me.
Skip Orem (22:56):
The point here is that you can’t depend on your doctor as your only source of information. They’ll give
you good information, but there is no way that they have the time to answer all the questions that
you’re going to come up with. After a doctor’s visit, you think you have all your questions answered, and
even on the ride home tons of more questions come to mind.
Skip Orem (23:22):
You’re not going to have a total fitness plan unless it includes research on your health and fitness. But congratulations, everybody, because you’re ahead of the game already. Why? Because, well, think about this. You know how to find, acquire, and listen to a podcast. That’s pretty amazing for folks as old as us. And if you’re listening to the Web Radio Today podcast, you already know how to find and how to research and learn and use new stuff. Just to make sure that you keep using and honing those research skills in your quest to stay healthy and to live a long life.
Skip Orem (24:06):
Try to help with this podcast as much as I can in 30 minutes every week, but that’s not enough. Well, just like our mini workouts are not complete workouts, the Web Radio Today podcast, it’s not a complete source of information for all the information that you’re going to need. I can help and get you started, but you need to make sure that you follow up.

I’m not recording this episode in my studio upstairs. We had some repairs we had to do up there. So I’m downstairs in the living room. And of course, on the only time this week that I could record the podcast, my neighbor decided to cut his grass. I’ll try to cut that out when I edit the podcast later today. Sometimes I can’t get it all out, so if you’re hearing an annoying noise in the background, sounds like a lawnmower, that is my neighbor on this beautiful late summer day here in Nolensville, Tennessee, one of Nashville’s most outstanding, cool little suburban town.
Skip Orem (27:47):
Beginning on Monday, I start my 40-day Facebook fast. I use Facebook to promote this podcast, but I’m also kind of addicted to it because I love reading what my friends have to say about things. There is a certain amount of junk on Facebook, and with this election coming up in the US, my friends on both sides tend to get pretty emotionally involved in the election. Lots of drama.
Skip Orem (28:16):
And all of this election drama tends to be somewhat stress inducing, and like many of you, I need to keep my stress level as low as possible. And I have no doubt that disengaging from Facebook during the next 40 days, I know that it’ll help to shield me from some of this stress caused by all this election drama. And it’s by no coincidence my fast will end the day after the election.
Skip Orem (28:45):
Choosing who will be our next president, the leader of the United States, it’s a big decision that every US voter’s going to need to make. Everybody, however you vote, I hope that you will pray on it and then make sure that you do vote. This is a critical time in the United States, and your vote may be more important now than ever. Having a good leader to guide our country through these difficult times, it’s so important.
Skip Orem (29:16):
Let’s talk for a minute or two about leadership. Sometimes used to joke around and say that I don’t want to be in any club if I’m not the president, I don’t want to be on any committee unless I’m its chairman, I don’t want to be in any meeting unless I’m running it. That all was partially my ego speaking, and perhaps me being some kind of a control freak.
Skip Orem (29:41):
But you know what, I think I used to say those things as a way of expressing my frustration with the process of coming to group decisions. I have been humbled since then, and I’ve come to realize that often group decisions are the very best kind of decisions. The more minds thinking it through, the better the resulting decision.
Skip Orem (30:09):
Every one of us has watched and experienced both outstanding and bad leadership as we’ve gone
through our lives. And I think there are people who we naturally look to for leadership: teachers,
mentors, pastors. Some of the leadership and the teaching that we receive from our parents back in the day, this is amazing, most of it’s still good advice and still very relevant in today’s world. And for many of us, that’s what build our character.
Skip Orem (30:43):
I firmly believe, though, that if Jesus is not in your life, that your life is lacking the critical leadership that you need.
Skip Orem (31:24):
In Luke chapter nine, verses 23 through 27, Jesus is talking with his disciples, and he says that, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world and yet lose or forfeit their very self?” And then ending with verse 26, “Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”
Skip Orem (32:34):
I think Jesus is telling his disciples and us, anyone who wants to follow him, they need to realize that he’s the leader, and we are following him. He’s telling us we’re not in the driver’s seat, he is. Now, I find a lot of comfort in that. We’re not in the driver’s seat, Jesus is.
Skip Orem (33:29):
In times of trouble, Jesus has got our back. Even with Jesus, though, things will be rough. There’s a lot we’re going to need the sacrifice. And I’ve said this before, you turn your life over to Jesus, things aren’t necessarily going to get better. In fact, they’ll probably get worse.
Skip Orem (33:48 ):
And I think that Jesus is also telling us to not run from suffering, but to embrace it. In times of trouble, when you’re suffering, Jesus will have your back when you give your life to him. Because we already know the ending, you and me in heaven, Jesus sitting at the right hand of God. And I imagine he will have this proud smile on his face as he welcomes us to eternal life with him.
Skip Orem (34:55):
When you think about it, it’s such a small time that we have here on earth. Heaven, though, is forever. Eternal life, that’s what we’re working for. That’s what we’re suffering for. That’s what we are sacrificing for.
Skip Orem (35:14):
The Web Radio Today podcast is all about self-help, getting and staying healthy, fighting off diseases. But most important of all, it’s about faith because your faith will save you. I know that for a fact. In times of trouble and time of serious illness, maybe even looking into the face of death, during those times the most comforting feeling is to know that Jesus has your back. That it’s all in God’s hands. What peace of mind. What comfort. What joy.
Skip Orem (36:33):
I say this every week on this podcast, there is no time. You need to let Jesus into your life today and accept his love, his comfort, his blessings, and yes, his leadership. I know some of you out there may be saying, “Well, I need to investigate this whole Jesus thing before I make any decisions.” I sort of get that.
It’s just that I worry because I know time could be running out. None of us even have our next hour on
earth guaranteed. And everybody, I want you to feel the same comfort and joy that I do.
Skip Orem (37:34):
I have very vivid memories of a dreary day here in Nashville last March. My wife was driving me to the Vanderbilt Medical Center for a six-hour, somewhat risky-for-my-age surgery that would, hopefully, get rid of advanced prostate cancer. And I remember, and this was before I had any drugs, we were just driving there in the car. I remember the excitement, the feeling that something good was about to happen, the confidence, the joy, the comfort. I remember the positive anticipation I felt knowing that Jesus had me in his arms. My future was guaranteed.
Skip Orem (38:27):
Now, don’t you want that comfort? Of course you do. If you’re not ready to give your life to Jesus yet, you’re thinking that you need to investigate this Jesus stuff first, and if you’re sure that your need to investigate is not just your mind wanting you to delay any kind of decision … because the devil’s going to do that. He’s going to tell you that you have all the time in the world. I sort of understand where you’re coming from, so here’s what you need to do right now.
Skip Orem (39:03):
Get going right now, immediately with your Jesus investigation. The answers, they are not on the internet. The answers are in the Bible. The four gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. But if you don’t want to go through all that reading, you’re afraid you might not understand everything that’s going on, today, walk into the first church that you see.
Skip Orem (39:32):
Walk into the door of that church and tell the first person that you meet, anybody in the church, the first person that you see, tell them you’re not real sure about this Jesus thing yet, but you want to learn more about him. Watch them smile. You’ll make a friend for life, and they will start you on your fact- finding journey. It has to be quick. Time, it goes by so fast. Please be quick about it.
Skip Orem (40:33):
