Skip Orem: (00:04)

Web Radio Today Disease Fighting and Fitness Model in Broad Strokes

Hi everybody I’m Skip Orem and this is Web Radio Today, the Faith and Fitness Podcast. And thank you so much everybody for pushing the play button for Episode Number 27. And we have a lot to talk about today as this October 30th Web Radio Today episode is going to bring Season One to a close. More about that later, and also a little bit later a preview of Season Two, and also, news about a special Web Radio Today episode coming up in December. Today’s episode is going to be in broad strokes, I’m going to try to hit all seven elements of the Web Radio Today, Disease Fighting and Fitness Model, faith and diet, exercise, and attitude. Music, guided imagery and research.

Skip Orem (00:59)

My approach to those seven elements on this episode is going to be a little different from what we’ve done in the past.

Skip Orem: (1:06)

This Episode Includes a Mini Workout

And then of course, we get to get up and do a brief mini workout a little bit later in the episode today. October coming to an end tomorrow and election day on Tuesday in the United States. And please everybody, if you haven’t voted already, I hope you’ll pray about it and then vote on Tuesday. Voting, it’s one of the great privileges and responsibilities of being a U.S. citizen.

Skip Orem (01:37)

Trick or Treat

Today’s episode is being recorded here at my Skip’s Voice Recording Studio in the quaint little Nashville suburban town of Nolansville, Tennessee. The moms on my street have decided that the kids will have a chance to go door-to-door to trick or treat for candy on Saturday. That makes me real happy because I’m all stocked up on SweeTarts and Skittles, M&M’s, Kit Kat bars, all kinds of different theater sized boxes of candy.

Skip Orem (02:12)

The Diet Element of The Web Radio Today Disease Fighting and Fitness Model

Talking about all those different types of candy makes a pretty good segue into a brief little segment right now dealing with the diet element of the Web Radio Today, Disease Fighting and Fitness Model. I designed that fitness model so that us baby boomers in our 60s and 70s and beyond so that we can really live our best life and of course that best life is to stay healthy and stay free of disease. We featured and talked in some detail about that diet element on a couple of our previous episodes, and I discovered maybe you have to that figuring out what to eat and what not to eat, it’s probably one the most difficult parts of staying fit and fighting off disease. There are just so many studies out there on the benefits and problems with different kinds of foods. What may have been determined to be bad for you this year may turn out because of a new study to be good for you next year.

Skip Orem: (03:22)

Confusing Studies

Remember back in 2010 when studies showed that coffee was bad for you and now here it’s 2020 and we find out that the coffee is good for us. I don’t think any of us believe that that means that scientists were wrong back in 2010, it just means that now, 10 years later, we’ve got a lot more information. That’s not only true about diet, but it’s true for most of our fitness elements. What’s good for you, what’s bad for you changes over time. Today, as we look at the Web Radio Today, Disease Fighting and Fitness Model, I’m going to paint it with broad strokes, make it a little easier, a little less complex. Looking at it with those broad strokes that might actually be an easier way of living a good life, not getting all bogged down in detailed studies, but following through on a very few well tested, over time, well tested over time, general guidelines and looking at the diet element.

Skip Orem (04:28)

Simple Broad Guidelines

Those general broad guidelines on diet they’re fairly simple. Be careful not to overeat, count calories if that’ll help you manage your food intake and then look at your plate. Eat the diet pyramid, starting with the vegetables and the fruits and the whole grains. Try to avoid foods like processed meats, red meat,

refined grains, and high energy beverages, avoid sugar and artificial sweeteners as much as you can. The difficult thing for that with me is red meat and maybe sugar a little bit. If you feel like me, that you can’t give up meat completely, that’s okay. Just do like I do, aim for a small portion, surrounded by green and orange and yellow vegetables. If we just think about those few guidelines, doesn’t that make watching what you eat easier? Broad strokes, no hard, fast rules, no detailed studies to review, just a few gentle guidelines.

Skip Orem: (05:50)

The Web Radio Today Exercise Element in Broad Strokes

Like diet, exercise doesn’t need to be all that complex, just really two things. Strengthen your heart and strengthen your muscles. But before we start talking in broad strokes about the exercise element, let’s do a Web Radio Today mini workout. And then after this mini workout, we’ll look at the exercise and research elements of the Web Radio Today Disease Fighting and Fitness Model. But right now let’s do a Web Radio Today mini workout. This little mini workout, this is where on every Web Radio Today podcast episode we take three minutes or so and we get up and we start moving in any way that we can. The goal here is pretty simple, the goal is to get your heart rate up just a bit, get your blood flowing and burn a little calories. Do anything you want to get moving. You can dance or walk, run cycle, whatever you want to do.

Skip Orem: (06:53)

This Episodes Mini Workout

If you’re doing a regular workout right now, a lot of folks do that, they listen to the Web Radio Today Podcast while they’re doing the workout, if you’re doing a workout right now kick up to the next level. You’re sitting down and can’t get up, no big deal, just start moving any way you safely can. This is the Web Radio Today mini workout.

(Music).

Skip Orem (10:42)

All right everybody, you can slow down, move a little slower, but don’t stop moving. Let’s take a couple of minutes and cool down from that mini workout.

Skip Orem (10:55)

Exercise General Guidelines

All right, let’s talk about exercise in broad strokes. The simple broad stroke facts are that you need to exercise in some way for at least 30 minutes each day. Everybody, if you don’t at least do that minimum amount, well then what’s going to happen, especially at our age, you’re going to open yourself up to so many potential health problems, illnesses, but more than that, your quality of life is going to suffer.

Skip Orem (11:27)

So broad strokes without much detail, exercise your heart by moving in some way, get your heart rate up for about 30 minutes at least five days a week. And then strengthen your muscles, muscles burn fat and at our age, our muscles, well, they tend to waste away. We need to prevent that for any number of reasons by doing some form of strength training, at least three or four times a week. There’s no need to go to the gym and work with heavy weights, the machines and all that. I mean, it’s nice if you can, however, just some light form of strength training like yoga will really improve your muscle strength. If you want to know more about strength training, checkout Web Radio Today Episode 15, it’s all about strength training. And just a reminder, all of the Web Radio Today episodes, there are 27 of them right now, all of those 27 Season One podcast episodes they’re available at webradiotoday.com just click on the Podcast and Shownotes page.

Skip Orem (12:40)

Those episodes are also available wherever you get your podcasts, search on Web Radio Today.

Skip Orem (12:58)

The Research Element of the Web Radio Today Disease Fighting and Fitness Model

And that leads me to the next element and the Web Radio Today Disease Fighting and Fitness Model, that element is research. Research, putting it in the fitness model as an element, it’s really just another way of highlighting the importance of staying up to date on health, disease and fitness information,

especially as it relates to folks in our age group. To help you with that I’ve created the Web Radio Today Audio Burst age at webradiotoday.com. That page has over 30 audio bursts from previous Web Radio Today podcast episodes. An audio burst, what that is, it’s just a short segment from a Web Radio Today podcast. So in a lot of cases, you don’t need to listen to an entire past podcast episode to get the specific health and fitness information that you want.

Skip Orem(13:54)

Web Radio Today Audio Bursts

Those 30 plus audio bursts they cover all the elements and the Web Radio Today, Disease Fighting and Fitness Model. Those audio bursts are short and most of them and really all of the Web Radio Today Episodes also have written transcripts attached. So if you don’t want to listen to them, you can just read the information. There’s also a Library page at webradiotoday.com and that’s where I’ve posted links to a lot of health and fitness information on the web, as well as links to books dealing with faith, fitness, diet, exercise, and positive imagery. Everything Web Radio Today related is at webradiotoday.com and I hope you’ll visit webradiotoday.com often as, as we take a little break here at the end of Season One and before we start Season Two next January.

Skip Orem (15:00)

The Importance of Music and the Arts to Good Health

I was thinking that I hope everybody, that you can see from the music that accompanies our Web Radio Today mini workout as well as our interval training workouts, I hope that you can see that music, it can be such a motivator in helping you to exercise, but more than that, music and the arts overall can be such an enrichment to your life, bringing you so much joy. I started playing the guitar about eight years ago and my math is right, I was 66 at the time. My grandchildren, they thought I was crazy, but I took my lessons, I spent lots of fun hours practicing and learning new songs. Well, not actually new songs, but old songs from back in the day that I enjoyed listening to on the radio. Now I get so much joy, so much fulfillment every day from playing my guitar

Skip Orem (15:57)

Music and the arts not only can they bring you fulfillment and joy, but they will keep you healthy. Playing a musical instrument, painting, working on crafts, playing cards and board games with your friends, all or any one of those activities can bring you so much joy, so much fulfillment, and literally add years to your life.

Skip Orem (16:53)

Guided Imagery/Focused Relaxation

Broad strokes on Web Radio Today, we’ve talked about diet and fitness, research and music and then later in the episode, we’ll spend some time on positive attitude and faith, so that leaves us with guided imagery, focused relaxation. A way to create calm and peaceful images in your mind that will allow you to have a mental escape from any stress or troubles that might be going on in your life. Guided imagery, it helped me to deal with all the stress caused by my cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

Skip Orem (17:30)

I was actually making myself sicker dealing with the stress of that diagnosis and figuring out what to do, the financial situation, worrying about my family and all that. I needed to calm down, relax. Guided imagery, sometimes I did three sessions a day, it just helped me so much. If you go to webradiotoday.com and click on the Podcast and Shownotes page, and then listen to episode eight, it gives you all the information you need about guided imagery. That episode, it also includes a short guided imagery session. And then there are also at Web Radio Today three audio bursts, stand alone guided imagery sessions. That’s on the Audio Burst page at webradiotoday.com. I’m going to link to all the episodes and audio bursts that I’m talking about today, I’ll link to them in the show notes for this episode, Episode 27.

Skip Orem (18:36 )

Guided imagery, it’s such a wonderful stress reliever. And by the way, the next episode of Web Radio Today, actually it’ll be the last episode of Season One, it’s going to be released on December 11th. That episode, Web Radio Today Episode Number 28 released on December 11th will be a standalone guided positive imagery session, especially designed to help you take a few minutes to get away from all of the stress of the holiday. Again, that’s Web Radio Today Episode 28, coming out on December 11th. Another short reminder, if you subscribe to Web Radio Today either at webradiotoday.com or from Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, Overcast, wherever you get your podcasts, if you subscribe, you’ll never miss an episode. And of course, every episode of the Web Radio Today Podcast, no cost, it’s free. Everybody, we haven’t done a featured song on Web Radio Today for a few weeks, so let’s enjoy one right now. And then after this featured song, we’ll talk about maintaining a positive attitude and your faith. For now though, sit back, relax and enjoy with me now, Jerry Wall, Fire in St. Peter’s.

MUSIC

Skip Orem (28:08)

We’ve used broad strokes today to talk about five of the seven elements of the Web Radio Today, Disease Fighting and Fitness Model. Let’s finish this episode, talking about faith and maintaining a positive attitude, they are linked in so many ways. Your faith and positive attitude, those are two elements that are invaluable in maintaining a healthy immune system and you need a healthy immune system, that’s that system in your body that keeps you healthy, gets rid of all the bad cells. If you have a disease, you need that immune system to fight the disease. And it’s that healthy immune system that keeps diseases from being able to attack you. But also faith and your positive attitude they are invaluable in just living your life. My positive attitude was instrumental in my battle with prostate cancer earlier this year. You’re not going to beat a serious disease with a negative attitude.

Skip Orem (24:38)

Positive Attitude

And the problem is when you get diagnosed with cancer or heart disease or diabetes, really any disease, your attitude’s going to take a nose dive, it’s just a function of getting that bad news. How long you let that negative attitude hang around, it will have an impact on your ability to survive the disease. You’re going to go through all those steps in the grief process, shock and denial, depression, anger, bargaining. If you don’t get on top of that right away, it could take you a long time to get through that process, well you have to speed it up. That degression and that anger, it will help the disease to grow and you don’t want that. So how do you quickly get your attitude right? How do you turn all that around and continue to live your life in a positive way? Get your mind right so that you have your wits about you and can do the research and make the decisions that you’ll need to ake to fight the disease that’s invaded your body?

The answer? Well, it’s your faith in God.

Skip Orem(26:18)

The Faith Element of the Web Radio Today Disease Fighting and Fitness Model

It is in God’s hands, what peace that thought can bring you each night as you fight life’s battles, what anxiety, what fear it can erase is in God’s hands. You really do need to free yourself, free yourself from trying to handle all of life’s problems on your own. Freedom comes from asking for God’s help and guidance. Think about this. What has come to destroy you, whatever it is, disease, the loss of a loved one, overpowering sadness, whatever has come to destroy you will bring you back to God.

Skip Orem(27:15)

You Cannot Predict the Future

I know that truth, I lived it. You cannot predict the future, playing the what if game, that is straight out negative thinking. You can’t predict the future, don’t waste another minute playing the what if game. When you think about yesterday, perhaps it was okay. Today, it’s a good day, tomorrow might also be looking pretty good

But beyond that, you don’t know anything about what’s going to happen in the future, so why worry about it?

Skip Orem(27:54)

Everything is in God’s Hands

Always everybody hope for the best, because your future, it can’t be controlled by you, everything is in God’s hands. Think about this. God, he loves us so much that he gave us his son, he gave his son to us. His perfect son had a terrible death, he died on the cross so that we might live forever. I’ve been asked this question, how did God make Jesus perfect but yet we’re his creation and we’re so flawed? God did create us and he gave us free choice, and starting with Eve, we’ve made a lot of bad choices, we still do, every one of us every day. We sin, we are flawed in so many ways we are not perfect. God, he created us, but he didn’t create Jesus. Jesus is from God. Jesus is God.

Skip Orem(29:00)

Accept Jesus’ Foregiveness, Strength and Love

Jesus is God’s son. Jesus, he’s part of the Holy Trinity father, son, and Holy ghost. Jesus is perfect. All powerful, such strength and he loves every one of us, he loves you. He knows everything about you, all the good and all the bad things we’ve all done in our life. He wants to forgive you, forgive us for everything. You will become a new person, all the bad things you’ve done, the bad things you’ve done in your past, the bad thoughts you might’ve had, they’re all going to be wiped away. Here everybody is the very important news for whatever battle you’re going through right now, whatever terrible things that you might be dealing with in your life. Jesus wants to help you in this battle. He wants to use his love, his strength, his power to help you fight this battle.

Skip Orem(30:08)

And everybody, you don’t have that kind of strength and power, you cannot do it on your own. And also, this little footnote, it’s important, Jesus, he is offering you eternal life. Don’t turn away from him, he wants to put his arms around you, he knows you’re hurting, he knows you’re worried. He knows and he can feel how troubled and upset you are. He wants to fight this battle with you, giving you his strength, his warmth, and his love for you. Don’t turn away from that and do not delay asking him for his help. Jesus, he wants to forgive you, he wants to welcome you home and he wants to put his arms around you and give you peace.

Skip Orem (31:04)

How can you not have a positive attitude with Jesus on your side fighting your battle with you? And you’ll have this, certainty. You will be certain that however all this works out, you’re going to have eternal life.

You will be given eternal life in heaven with Jesus.

Skip Orem (31:48)

Then this, there is no more time to think about it. No more time to study up on it, no more time to get your act together. You don’t really have any time, you don’t know what’s ahead tomorrow. You don’t even know what the future brings later today, no more time.

Skip Orem(32:15)

Is there a church that maybe you pass that seems to be calling out to you, or maybe it’s not calling out to you, maybe its just become part of your day only because you pass it every day when you’re driving around? You have no idea what it looks like inside, it’s just always been there. Well do this, I promise you, nothing can go wrong with this. Do this. Walk into the door, that church and tell the very first person that you see, don’t ask to see someone who might be in charge, tell that that very first person you see, they might be doing something, you might be interrupting them and that’s no problem just tell the first person you see, tell them that you want to know about Jesus.

Skip Orem:(33:10)

I promise you this, they will turn to you and look at you with a smile on their face and they will never forget, in their whole life, they’re never going to forget you walking through that door.

Skip Orewm (33:25)

You will bring

them so much joy and they will help you let Jesus into your life.

Skip Orem (34:00)

Everybody, I have so many exciting things that I have planned for Web Radio Today Season Two. Season Two, it’s going to begin on Friday, January 15th, 2021. Wow, 2021 sounds so fresh when you say it, especially after all we’ve been through this year. Season Two will of course continue to focus on the Web Radio Today, Disease Fighting and Fitness Model, but on Season Two, we’re really going to be focusing on two areas that are so important to us older folks in our 60s and our 70s and beyond. Now, of course, faith will be the cornerstone of every Web Radio Today episode.

Skip Orem(35:54)

But then the other area that I want to really focus on during Season Two, I want to focus our Season Two podcast on disease fighting. Fighting those terrible diseases that try to come and really try to come and get us baby boomers, they try to take us out. How can we prevent them? How can we battle them when we get them? How can we get ourselves cured? How can we get rid of those diseases? That’s going to be the focus of Season Two Web Radio Today, faith and disease fighting. I hope, everybody, that you will be listening on January 15th, 2021 when we release our first Season Two episode and like Season One, all of our episodes, all of our podcast episodes, they’re available at webradiotoday.com, but they’re also available wherever you get your podcasts.

Skip Orem (35:54)

E;pisode 28- Guided Positive Imagery on December 11, 2020
Season 2 Starts on January 15th 2021

Oh, and don’t forget this. There is also one more Season One episode to go. December 11th, a special guided positive imagery session, I’m already working on that special episode. It’s going to be so special and it will help you deal with the stress and the anxiety that comes along during the holiday season. That is Web Radio Today, Episode 28 on December 11th. If you live in the USA, don’t forget to vote next Tuesday.

Skip Orem (36:31)
